Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I want to live at Abbeyfield House?

Abbeyfield House provides a “home within a home” for seniors who no longer want to live alone.  It offers a friendly, family-style house and a balance between privacy and companionship, security and independence, combined with the special caring element provided by dedicated staff and volunteers.

What is the role of the House Coordinator?

The House Coordinator runs Abbeyfield House, ensuring that residents receive nutritious meals, are encouraged to participate in activities and feel safe and secure.

Who may apply for accommodation?

If you are over the age of 60, reasonably fit and looking for a supportive home, you may apply.  There is sometimes a waiting list for accommodation.

Can married couples be accommodated?

At present, Abbeyfield House Saskatoon only has one suite that can accommodate two people. This suite is also ideal for a single person requiring extra space.

What are the monthly charges for room and board?

Abbeyfield House is administered by a volunteer Board and is a non-profit organization.  The cost is kept as low as possible and monthly rental charges include food and utilities.  Rates are more favourable than retirement homes.  Please inquire for current rates.

Is there an upper limit of income or a capital deposit required?

            No.

Do I need to be sponsored?

We ask each applicant to designate a trusted relative, friend or professional advisor who can be contacted and consulted in case of an emergency or other difficulty.  It is recommended that at least one sponsor live in or near Saskatoon.  No financial involvement is required on their part.

Are there rules and regulations?

There are no rules and regulations other than those of normal household courtesy. Abbeyfield expects residents and staff to behave respectfully at all times and to take the feelings of others into account. You will be free to do as you choose, to come and go as you wish.  Abbeyfield will be your home.

Is smoking allowed?

Abbeyfield House Saskatoon provides a smoke-free environment.

What type of personal belongings may I bring?

You will need to furnish your own room.  Abbeyfield will be your home so you may bring personal belongings that will fit reasonably and safely in your room.

Will someone clean my room and do my laundry?

Each occupant is responsible for their own room and laundry, but cleaning supplies and laundry facilities are available.  If you need help, your family may assist you, or you may employ domestic help at your own expense (some of our housekeeping staff are willing to undertake this task).

Will I have to share bathroom facilities?

All rooms at Abbeyfield House Saskatoon have private bathroom facilities – shower, toilet and sink.

Could I bring my pet?

Pets are not allowed at Abbeyfield Saskatoon, but pets may visit on occasion.

What meals will be provided?

Breakfast items are set out for residents to help themselves.  Lunch and supper are prepared daily. A sense of community has been enhanced during shared meals.

Can Abbeyfield House cope with a special diet?

This will depend on the extent of the diet restrictions.  Please inquire further.

May I do some cooking or gardening?

What happens if I become ill?

If you become ill, your sponsors will be notified.  If you are hospitalized, it is taken for granted that you will return to your room at Abbeyfield, provided you can attend to all of your personal daily needs.
